American Kestrel - Birds of Chicago Greeting Card
Our 2020 Lost Species Day Concert benefit (in video format because of the Pandemic) was in support of Chicago Bird Collision Monitors, and our theme that year was birds of Chicago. I created an illustration for each bird we wrote a song about and made greeting cards out of my favorite four.
When I painted this American Kestrel, I knew very little about birds. In fact, it was after this project that I got into birding! So I suppose I could have picked a more colorful, male Kestrel as a reference image. But I do so love the female and juvenile birds, with their earthy, drab plumage. The males may be the prettiest, but females have adapted to blend in with the nest and have a built in camouflage, and I think that’s neat.
Each card is blank inside, measures 7” x 5”, and comes with an envelope.
