When I decided to include my song “Home” on this record, I thought that it would make the perfect title for the whole album, considering each one of these songs was recorded at home. And there are also songs here, in addition to “Home,” that are about this very thing. For instance, “Wooden City,” about the Great Chicago Fire, begins with “My hometown, set ablaze.” “We Have Love” is a snapshot of a morning in my life with Oscar. And “Elm” is a song written about the Elm Tree outside my apartment building on Eastwood, and its desire to connect with me up here on the 3rd floor.
But as I think more about home and what it means, I’m struck with the idea that this beautiful planet is home to so much life, and so much of it is going away because of us. From birds to bees to butterflies, so many creatures’ populations are in decline because of habitat destruction, among other reasons. It’s difficult to even begin to think what can be done about it. Obviously, this problem is not just for animal lovers and those who love camping. All of life is connected, and we need even the weeds to be food for the larvae of the insects who pollinate the plants (including many that we eat) and in turn are food to birds and so on and so forth. We need all of these lifeforms to sustain our own life on Earth.
How do we balance our human needs and conveniences with the actions necessary to restore threatened animal and plant populations? I wrestle with that question myself. While I don’t have the answers, I invite you to think on this topic and the ways you can reduce your negative impact on the environment. Can you plant some native plants in your garden? Can you bring your own “doggy bag” when you eat out? Can you consider what you buy and what kind of packaging it comes with? Can you give money to local or world conservation efforts?
Not all of us are going to be able to lobby against styrofoam or only buy organic food. But we can each find ways in our everyday life to minimize our negative impact. Individually, we really must make the choice to fix this problem.
